Fact Or Fiction: Black People Can't Get Skin Cancer

Myth: Black people can't get skin cancer.

Truth: Black People can in fact get skin cancer.

Although people of color has melanin you can get sun burnt and skin cancer. Our skin gets darker as a defense mechanism putting up a shield to block the sun UV rays. That's also a sign that you need to get out the sun and into some shade.

Because of our melanin its harder to detect the real damages from the sun, once detected it is already at a higher stage.

Prevention:

• Try wearing a visor or hat to protect your face or hat if you're bald 
• Apply SPF 30 sunscreen
• Wear sun protective clothing, long sleeves or pants. (Feet & hands included)
• Seek shade between 10am-4pm

I know, who wants to wear that in the summer months! Remember, your skin is your largest organ- it's YOUR job to protect it!
